Chicken Church

This abandoned structure is known to the locals as Geraja Ayam – meaning Chicken Church – and each year it attracts hundreds of curious tourists and photographers on the hills of Magelang. According to the person who built it – Daniel Alamsjah, the building is neither a chicken nor a church.

He’s saying that he was working in Jakarta when he received a message from God, who told him to build a “prayer house” in the shape of a pigeon. “People probably thought that because of my religion I’m building a church. But, it’s not a church. I’ve built a house of prayers… a place where people who believe in God can come and pray.”

In 1989 he was in the Magelang area, the place where his wife’s family lives and he saw the perfect spot that he dreamt about. “I prayed there all night and I had a revelation that showed me that I must build there the house of prayer.”

In present time, people of different religious beliefs – including Buddhists, Muslims or Christians travel so they can pray. The house of prayer closed its doors in 2000 because of high maintenance costs.

Over 160 miles away from the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, lies an incredible and unique place. The Darvaza Crater, also known as the “Door to Hell” or the Crater of Fire, is an underground cavern. It has been burning continuously for over 40 years and has become a surprisingly beautiful tourist attraction.

A team of Soviet engineers discovered the place back in 1971, as they were looking for oil. However, as they reached the site, they found out, that it was filled with gas. In order to prevent any unfortunate events from happening, they deliberately collapsed the ground. The result was a 200 feet wide crater with the diameter of 230 feet.

It didn’t take long, until researchers found out about the risk of crater’s poisonous gases, that could cause great damage to the nearby cities. Therefore, they set the whole place on fire to eliminate substances such as methane. The team was convinced, that the fire would end in a couple of weeks but, surprisingly, the crater has been burning for over 4 decades.

Every year, the location attracts thousands of curious tourists, from all over the globe. The crater filled with flames and burning mud, offers tourists an alluring view of “the Door to Hell.”

Hidden Beach

Playa Del Amor or Hidden Beach  it is a small paradise hidden by the rocks of the Marieta Islands in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This is one of the few places in the world, where a man-made mistake combined with the beauty of nature resulted in a breathtaking scenery.

The main reason why the Hidden Beach, or Playa Del Amor, is such an interesting location, is that it’s literally hidden. The only way it can be seen is from up above. And the only way to get to the beach is through a water tunnel connecting the beach to the Pacific Ocean.

Most of the Marieta Islands were never inhabited, thus leaving room for a nature to follow its course and create a fairy tale-like place. At the beginning of the 20th century, Mexicans began to create and test bombs to prepare for World War I and the only way to test them was by detonations in the ocean. It is believed that some of the bombs landed on the small Marieta Islands, including the Hidden Beach.

Playa Del Amor is the ideal place for swimming and kayaking. Due to the massive hole that remained intact for over a century, there is enough sun and shade for laying on the sun or for taking a nap.

Since 2005, the Marieta Islands have been officially declared as a National Park, known as the Parque Nacional Islas Marietas. Even though islands cannot be inhabited, they can be visited any time by tourists, who dream of a unique getaway in nature.
